Training Volume: The One Number Worth Watching

Training volume is the total loaded work in a session. For rep-based kettlebell exercises, calculate it by multiplying each set’s repetitions by the load moved, then adding the sets together.

Set volume = repetitions × load
Session volume = the sum of every set's volume

Five sets of 10 swings with 24 kg produce 1,200 kg of volume:

5 sets × 10 reps × 24 kg = 1,200 kg

Volume is worth watching because it turns many sets into one comparable total. It can show the work rising, holding steady, or falling across repeated sessions. It is not a complete score for the workout, and a higher number is not automatically better.

Count every actual repetition

Start with the repetitions the bell really traveled through, not the shorthand written in the plan.

Suppose you perform five rounds of 10 one-arm swings on the left and 10 on the right with 20 kg. Each round contains 20 actual repetitions.

5 rounds × 20 reps × 20 kg = 2,000 kg

Do not calculate five rounds × 10 reps unless the “10” already means the total across both sides. This is why side-specific rows are useful. They remove the ambiguity:

Repeat that pair five times and the session total is 2,000 kg.

If the two sides complete different work, keep the difference. Four sets of five presses on the right and three sets of five on the left are 35 total repetitions, not a symmetrical 40.

Add both bells in double-kettlebell work

One repetition of a double front squat moves both bells. Add their weights before multiplying by repetitions.

Five sets of five squats with two 20 kg bells produce:

Total load per rep = 20 kg + 20 kg = 40 kg
Volume = 5 sets × 5 reps × 40 kg = 1,000 kg

If the bells are different weights, use their combined load. A 20 kg bell plus a 24 kg bell equals 44 kg per repetition. Record which side held each bell if you plan to reverse them later.

This rule also applies to double cleans and presses. The set contains five repetitions, not ten, but each repetition moves the combined weight of both bells.

Calculate uneven sets one at a time

The shortcut sets × reps × load works only when all sets match. When repetitions or bells change, calculate each set and add the results.

Consider a press session:

The session volume is 284 kg. Writing the plan as “4 × 5” and multiplying would invent repetitions that did not happen and ignore the bell change.

Keep the unit consistent

You can calculate volume in kilograms, pounds, or poods. Use one unit inside a total.

If one bell is labeled in kilograms and another in pounds, convert one before adding the session. Do not add 600 kg and 800 lb to produce “1,400” of anything. Store the original bell weight if that is useful, but perform the calculation in a consistent base unit.

A pood is about 16.38 kg or 36.11 lb. Expressing volume in poods gives the same work a kettlebell-native scale. A 1,638 kg total is about 100 poods lifted. Kilograms and pounds remain equally valid; the conversion is another view of the same loaded work.

Separate volume by exercise before combining it

A whole-session total can be satisfying, but the exercise-level totals usually make the better comparison.

One thousand kilograms of swings and one thousand kilograms of presses are not equivalent sessions. The movements use different loads, repetition ranges, and constraints. Adding them is mathematically valid, but the combined result can hide the change you care about.

Review volume at three levels:

  1. Exercise volume: best for comparing the same movement across sessions.
  2. Session volume: useful for seeing the overall size of similar workouts.
  3. Weekly volume: useful for noticing broad changes in repeated training.

Compare swing volume with earlier swing volume. Compare press volume with earlier press volume. Use the session total as context, not as proof that two different workouts were equal.

Know what the number leaves out

Volume does not describe everything that made the work demanding. The same total can come from:

  • 10 sets of 10 or 5 sets of 20;
  • short rest or long rest;
  • one continuous complex or separate exercises;
  • smooth repetitions or deteriorating technique; and
  • balanced sides or an uneven result.

It also fits some exercises better than others. Repetitions × load works cleanly for swings, squats, cleans, presses, rows, and get-ups. Carries need distance or duration. Timed holds need time. Bodyweight movements do not have a useful kettlebell load to multiply.

Do not force those activities into the formula. Track their relevant measure beside volume.

Pace belongs beside volume too. Completing 1,200 kg in 12 minutes is different from completing it in 20, but volume alone cannot tell you why. For fixed-minute work, keep the interval and completed rounds with the total. The guide to minute-based kettlebell sessions explains that pacing record.

Watch a trend, not a daily record chase

Volume becomes useful across repeated, comparable sessions. Put two to six weeks of the same exercise side by side and look for the direction.

A rising trend can come from:

  • more repetitions with the same bell;
  • more sets with the same repetitions;
  • a heavier bell for the same work; or
  • completing more of the planned session.

A flat week may be intentional. A lower-volume session may use a heavier bell, longer rests, or fewer but stronger repetitions. A planned reduction can make the next training block more repeatable.

Use volume to ask a better next question

When the total changes, do not stop at “up” or “down.” Ask what created the change.

  • Did you use a heavier bell?
  • Did you add completed repetitions?
  • Did one side fall behind?
  • Did the session structure change?
  • Did shorter rest alter the pace?
  • Was the previous entry incomplete?

That review keeps volume connected to the actual sets.

Watch volume because it compresses a long set log into a useful signal. Trust it only when the inputs are clean, the units match, and the sessions are comparable. The number should start the review, not end it.
