Kettlebell Weight Conversion: kg, lb, and Pood

To convert a kettlebell from kilograms to pounds, multiply by 2.205. To convert pounds to kilograms, divide by 2.205. For the older pood unit, one pood is about 16.38 kg or 36.11 lb.

Those formulas are exact enough for a training log. Shopping is less tidy. A bell sold as 16 kg may be described as 35 lb, even though 16 kg converts to 35.27 lb. That label is not an error. It is a practical name for the same common size.

Use the stamped weight when you log the bell. Use the tables below when a plan, store, or training partner speaks a different unit.

Most metric kettlebells follow 4 kg steps, with 2 kg sizes filling the gaps. The pound values below are conversions, not promises about what a manufacturer will print on the bell.

Common pound kettlebells in kilograms

Pound-labeled kettlebells often follow 5 or 10 lb steps. Some sellers also use 35, 53, 70, 88, and 106 lb because those numbers sit close to traditional metric sizes.

Converted values do not make nearby sizes interchangeable in every set. A 45 lb bell is 20.4 kg, not 20 kg, and a 50 lb bell is 22.7 kg, not 24 kg. The difference may be small enough for casual comparison and still matter when you calculate volume or follow a load-specific plan.

Use the label, not the rounded nickname

When the bell is in front of you, the number stamped by its maker is the useful number. Record 35 lb if the bell says 35 lb. Do not replace it with 16 kg merely because the two are commonly paired.

That choice preserves the real load:

  • A 16 kg bell is 35.27 lb.
  • A 35 lb bell is 15.88 kg.
  • The difference is 0.12 kg, or about a quarter pound.

Across 100 repetitions, that small per-rep difference produces a 12 kg difference in calculated volume. It will not transform the session, but there is no reason to introduce the error when the original label is available.

The same rule applies to a mismatched pair. If you use one 16 kg bell and one 35 lb bell for double-bell work, convert one unit before adding them:

35 lb ÷ 2.205 = 15.88 kg
16 kg + 15.88 kg = 31.88 kg per repetition

Do not add 16 and 35 and call the result 51. The numbers describe different units.

Convert a training plan without inventing a bell

A plan written in kilograms may prescribe 24 kg while your rack is labeled in pounds. The mathematical conversion is 52.9 lb. If you own a 53 lb bell, the match is effectively direct.

If you own only 50 and 55 lb bells, conversion cannot decide which one you should use. It tells you that 50 lb is 22.7 kg and 55 lb is 24.9 kg. Choosing between them still depends on the exercise, the repetitions, your prior work, and the intent of the session.

Keep three values separate:

  1. The planned load: what the session called for.
  2. The available load: the bell you actually own.
  3. The completed load: what you used for the recorded set.

Convert volume only after the set is clear

Unit conversion and volume calculation are separate steps. First determine the load and the actual repetition count. Then multiply.

For 10 swings with 24 kg:

10 reps × 24 kg = 240 kg
240 kg × 2.205 = 529.2 lb
240 kg ÷ 16.38 = 14.65 poods

All three totals describe the same work. Do not convert the bell to a rounded 53 lb first and then calculate unless 53 lb is what the bell actually weighs. Rounding before multiplication can magnify the difference.

How much precision belongs in a workout log?

Use enough precision to identify the bell without creating noise.

  • Keep the original labeled weight exactly as printed.
  • Show converted bell weights to one decimal place when needed.
  • Show pood values to two decimal places for individual bells.
  • Round session volume only for display, not before adding the sets.

A log entry does not need five decimal places. The underlying conversion should be consistent, while the visible number should remain readable.
